September 15 – October 17 | Opening Reception: Friday, September 18, 5–8pm
In Chromatic States, Amy Van Winkle turns twelve colors into a study of interior life. Each hue in the series stands in for an emotional or mental state - the restlessness of one, the stillness of another - and the resulting twelve works, ranging widely in scale, ask what it means to sit inside a feeling long enough to see its color. Van Winkle treats pigment less as description than as evidence, letting each encaustic panel hold a single register of experience.
Accompanying the larger paintings is an installation of twelve 12" x 12" studies, one for each work in the series. Hung together, the smaller pieces function as a kind of index; the full emotional spectrum of the exhibition compressed into a single wall, where each state can be read against the others. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 18, from 5 to 8pm.
