Shaped by Light brings together the work of Southern California artists Patrick DeAngelis, Heather Zusman, and Austin Fields, each exploring the ways in which light reveals, defines, and transforms. Across painting, wood, and glass, light becomes an active force—softening edges, casting shadows, and guiding perception. DeAngelis distills the landscape to its most essential elements, where subtle tonal shifts and a singular horizon line evoke vast, atmospheric space. Fields approaches light through translucency and reflection, shaping molten glass into fluid, organic forms that capture and refract their surroundings. Zusman’s sculptural works, composed of layered wood veneers, bend and swell with precision, their curved surfaces interacting with light to cast quiet, dimensional shadows.
Rooted in the distinct atmosphere of Southern California, the exhibition reflects a sensitivity to its expansive skies, coastal haze, and shifting luminosity. Each artist offers a contemplative study of stillness and movement, where material and light exist in constant dialogue. Together, the works invite a slowed viewing experience—one attuned to nuance, where light is not only observed, but felt as it moves across surface, through space, and within form.
