This body of work investigates abstraction through layered surfaces and organic forms. Each painting is developed through a slow and intuitive process of adding and subtracting. Shapes surface and recede evoking the suggestion of growth, erosion and movement. The palette is intentionally restrained. Built through nuanced shifts of color, the shapes are layered, veiled, and reworked creating depth through the interaction of translucent and opaque passages. While the paintings are non-representational, they may evoke elements of the natural world.
Kennedy Contemporary is pleased to present Where Forms Gather, the third solo exhibition by Newport Beach–based artist Elyse Katz. The exhibition coincides with the five-year anniversary of Kennedy Contemporary, marking a significant milestone in the gallery's ongoing commitment to presenting thoughtful, process-driven contemporary abstraction.
In Where Forms Gather, Katz continues her investigation of abstraction through layered surfaces and organic form. Working through a slow and intuitive process of addition and subtraction, each painting evolves over time as shapes surface and recede. The resulting compositions suggest growth, erosion, and movement—states of becoming rather than fixed conclusions.
The exhibition will be on view February 16 - March 20, with the opening night on February 26, 4 - 7 pm.
