“There’s a monumentality to the city of LA as it is constantly expanding and changing. It is an unpredictable landscape. But there are constants that remain elemental—the desert, the sky, the sea. Life, motion, and being.”
Kennedy Contemporary is delighted to announce Letters to LA, a solo exhibition by acclaimed artist Joseph Justus, on view from February 10 through March 14, 2024. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, February 13, from 4 to 7 pm, celebrating Justus's third solo exhibition with the gallery.
In Letters to LA, Joseph Justus presents a profound exploration of the ever-changing city of Los Angeles, weaving together its dynamic urban energy with the timeless constants of the desert, sky, and sea. Through his vivid and expressive work, Justus captures the essence of a city defined by transformation and resilience, offering viewers a deeply personal ode to its contrasts and contradictions.
“Los Angeles is a city of perpetual evolution—both fleeting and enduring," explains Justus. "This body of work serves as a love letter to its dichotomies, its vibrance, and the natural forces that remain steadfast amidst its flux."
In light of the recent devastating fires, Justus’ work has taken on a new meaning. This exhibition features a series of paintings that blend abstract elements, creating visual narratives about both the deadly chaos and serenity of the region. The works invite audiences to reflect on the intersection of human ambition and nature's immutable beauty, embodying Justus's signature ability to capture the intangible spirit of place.
Kennedy Contemporary invites collectors, art enthusiasts, and the community to experience this evocative tribute to Los Angeles.
