Behind the Scenes: How We Curate Our Exhibitions

Planning the Floorplan

Before an upcoming exhibition, we began by digitally mapping the gallery walls in Google Slides. Each artwork is represented by a scaled rectangle, which helps us visualize how pieces interact with each other and with the architecture of the gallery.

This method allows us to:

  • Identify walls that need additional works or adjustments

  • Test groupings and sight lines for optimal visual impact

  • Ensure that the narrative of the exhibition flows naturally from one section to the next

By starting with this “digital floorplan,” we can make informed decisions about spacing, scale, and placement.

Collaboration and Flexibility

As with any creative process, things often change! Artists may tweak a piece, new works may be added last minute, or we may discover opportunities to highlight certain works differently. The digital planning stage is invaluable because it allows us to adjust quickly, communicate effectively with our artists, and anticipate potential challenges before installation day.

We also consider lighting, sightlines, and visitor experience, ensuring each exhibition feels cohesive, engaging, and dynamic. In many ways, this behind-the-scenes work is where the magic begins—transforming a gallery into a space that tells a story and elevates each artwork.

Installation Day

On the day of the installation, we set up the new artworks around the gallery according to our digital layout. However, inevitably some placements may change! Perhaps we are seeing a new artwork for the first time and the color is much brighter in person than in the images or the sizing was slightly off. Installation day is the time when we use our decades plus experience in curation (and our better judgement) to rearrange if necessary. Ultimately, we strive to curate an exhibition that best reflects our artists’ work and the gallery space.

Final Thoughts

Exhibition curation is a blend of creativity, logistics, and collaboration. At Kennedy Contemporary, our approach combines practical tools, thoughtful planning, and close relationships with our artists to deliver shows that resonate with both collectors and the broader community.
