Mary Nelson Sinclair
Featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Veranda, House Beautiful, Domino, and VOGUE, Mary's evolving practice continues to explore the intersection of process, material, and meaning.
Mary Nelson Sinclair (b. 1984) is an artist based in the Hudson Valley of New York. Originally from Dallas, TX, Sinclair received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from the Pratt Institute in 2008. Her work is grounded in her daily life, responding to both the intimate surroundings of home and the complex roles of artist and mother. These roles, though distinct, are inextricably linked—neither offering full control but both requiring an intuitive, guiding presence.
Sinclair’s paintings evolve through the interaction of various materials, each influencing the other in unexpected ways. Saturated hues and energetic brushstrokes shape the composition, while the layering and contrast of mixed media add depth to each piece, balancing vibrancy with restraint. This organic process is central to her creative approach, with her ever-changing techniques and material experiments often becoming a focal point of an individual work or an entire series.
Her work has been featured in prominent publications, including Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Veranda, House Beautiful, Domino, and VOGUE. Through constant experimentation and an evolving practice, Sinclair continues to explore the delicate balance between spontaneity and control in both her art and her life.
